India’s 15-person team for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2023 has had to undergo a last-minute adjustment.

Axar Patel had a left quadriceps strain during India’s Asia Cup Super Four match against Bangladesh, and he was unable to make a full recovery in time for the World Cup. As a result, the spin-bowling all-rounder missed the Asia Cup championship game.

He has been replaced by veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who had a brilliant comeback to ODI cricket in the recently finished series against Australia, picking up four wickets in two games.

Axar was also named conditionally to the team for the last ODI contingent on his health, however he was unable to play when India lost that match in Rajkot by a score of 66 runs.

India has relied on Ashwin’s expertise to fill the gap left by Axar. Additionally, Ashwin adds an off-spinning option to India’s World Cup lineup that was previously absent, which might be essential in the 46-day competition when surfaces start to degrade.

The 37-year-old also has experience playing on a large platform, having represented India in the World Cups of 2011 and 2015. Aswhin took 13 wickets in eight games at the tournament in Australia, helping India advance to the semifinal.

After the three-match ODI series against Australia, Rohit Sharma made it plain that India is set on the 15-player roster for the World Cup and that any changes won’t affect their strategy there.

“When we talk about the 15, we are very clear about what we want,” the skipper remarked. We are not lost; as a team, we are aware of our direction. It’s a team sport, therefore we encourage everyone to participate since that’s how we triumph. It’s about taking care of the body and attempting to stay healthy for the next 1.5 months.

Despite Axar’s absence from the World Cup, India has nearly a full-strength lineup at their disposal thanks to the successful long-term injury comebacks of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah.

In the games coming up to the competition, each of the three stars contributed significantly. Rahul made his comeback official with a stunning century against Pakistan in the Super Four Asia Cup match. Iyer also scored a century in Australia’s second one-day international.

Bumrah has shown signs of getting back to his best, which included a ferocious outburst against Pakistan in the Asia Cup Super Fours. After going for a run in each of his first two ODI matches against Australia, the legendary bowler put on a death bowling exhibition.

On October 7, India will face Australia, the five-time defending World Cup champion, in Chennai. Before the competition, Rohit Sharma’s team will play two exhibition games, the first against England on September 30 and the second against the Netherlands on October 3.

India World Cup squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.
