India became the No.1 ranked ODI team after being won against Australia and as a result, accomplished a rare feat in rankings history.

Following their victory against Australia, India ascended to the top of the MRF Tyres Men’s ODI Team Rankings

, indicating that they are making progress as they prepare to host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2023.

After winning the first ODI, India (116 rating points) overtook Pakistan (115) as the team with the highest rating. Australia is still in third place, but the difference between them and the top two has grown since they dropped two points to 111.

India currently holds the top rank in every format after previously holding it in Tests and T20Is thanks to the victory.

LATEST MEN’S ODI TEAM RANKINGS

In the first ODI, India accomplished the feat with ease, defeating Australia by a margin of five wickets. The highlight of their bowling performance, after acting skipper KL Rahul decided to field first, was Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul.

Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad responded by scoring fifty runs each and putting up a 142-run opening stand. Despite losing a few quick wickets, the hosts were able to win with to fifty-plus scores from Surykumar Yadav and Rahul.

The top spot in the ODI Team Rankings has been up for grabs recently, with India, Pakistan, and Australia all vying for it during the just-concluded Asia Cup and Australia’s ODI series against South Africa.

Despite missing the Asia Cup Final, Pakistan maintained their top ranking. During the Asia Cup and the South Africa series, India and Australia both had chances to win the ODI championship but dropped crucial matches.

Australia no longer has a chance to enter the World Cup as the top team as a result of the loss. If Australia wins the final two games, Pakistan might still win the championship.

India is still in the lead right now, and a victory in the current series will assure them of that position going into their home country’s big match.

With them already holding the No. 1 ranking in Tests and T20 Internationals, India’s supremacy now spans all formats of the game. A team has only ever reached the top spot across all formats once before in the history of men’s cricket. Only South Africa had previously accomplished this feat, back in August 2012.

India has shown incredible consistency in the lengthier format, and as a result, they advanced to the World Test Championship Final for the second time in a row in June, despite failing to cross the finish line once more. With the exception of the series loss to South Africa in 2021–22, they have a nearly perfect recent record in bilateral series.

India advanced to the T20 World Cup semifinals in T20 International matches in 2022. Since the T20 World Cup in 2021, they have lost just one series out of fourteen, making their recent performance in bilateral T20I series all the more impressive.
