India missed a wonderful opportunity to dominate the rankings charts across formats as a result of their Super Four loss to Bangladesh at the Asia Cup.

Before the Asia Cup clash against Bangladesh on Friday, 15 September, India held the No.2 position on the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings with 116 rating points, just slightly trailing top-ranked Australia, who led with 118 points.

Achieving victories over Bangladesh in the Asia Cup Super Four match and South Africa defeating top-ranked Australia in the penultimate ODI of their five-match series would have given India, who currently leads the Test and T20I rankings, a golden opportunity to take the top spot in ODIs.

However, only one of the two outcomes favoured India, with the Proteas defeating Australia by a score of 164 runs while India lost to Bangladesh by a margin of just six runs.

In addition to losing the opportunity to maintain first place in both formats, India dropped to third place in the rankings table with a rating of 114, behind Pakistan and Australia.

With Australia at 115.259 and Pakistan at No. 2 with a rating of 114.889, there is currently only a little rating difference between the two countries.

India would not be ranked No. 1 even if Australia loses their final one-day international to South Africa and India wins the Asia Cup on Sunday, September 17. However, if Australia were to lose in such a case, Pakistan would gain the upper hand and take over first place.

In a three-match ODI series beginning on September 22, India will host Australia, continuing the competition for first place. The series will determine who will be the top ODI team heading into the World Cup as well as aid both sides in gaining momentum.

The top spot in the ODI Team Rankings has recently been up for grabs, with Australia, Pakistan, and India all vying for it during the Asia Cup and Australia’s ODI series against South Africa.

Pakistan, who topped the rankings following a 3-0 rout of Afghanistan in late August, dropped to No. 2 following humiliating losses to India and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup.
