In ODIs, South Africa scored over 400 runs for the seventh time, led by Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller’s mind-blowing assault.

SA v AUS, 4th ODI, Scorecard

As the hosts piled on 416/5 in fifty overs during the fourth ODI in Centurion, Australia was the victim of yet another exceptional South African batting performance. The most of any team, South Africa has now amassed seven ODI totals of over 400.

As a result of Klaasen’s 174 off just 83 balls and his century off 57 deliveries, South Africa scored 268 runs in the final 20 overs and 173 in the final 10 overs. Miller’s 45-ball 82 provided him with solid assistance.

The pair put together a record-breaking double-century stand in just 85 balls, finishing on 222 off 92. They were only broken by Klaasen’s hole-out off Marcus Stoinis on the last ball.

The 14.47 run rate between Miller and Klaasen on Friday was the best run rate for a double-century stand in ODI history.

Due to Klaasen’s contribution, this score ranks as the eighth-highest by a South African in men’s ODIs. The 57-ball century against Australia is also the second-fastest in ODIs behind Virat Kohli’s 52-ball hundred in Jaipur in 2013.

With his 174, Klaasen tied Kapil Dev’s 175* against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup for the second-highest ODI score by a player batting at No. 5 or lower.

Adam Zampa, meantime, set a regrettable record by giving up 113 runs in his ten overs, which is a joint-highest total by a bowler in men’s ODIs. In the infamous series finale between these two teams in 2006, when South Africa chased down 435, Mick Lewis of Australia also gave up 113 runs.

South Africa unveil squad for World Cup 2023

The batting display in this game highlights South Africa’s power as a batting team, despite the fact that they entered this match behind the ODI series 2-1. This performance against the top-ranked team in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings is as good a warning as any as they pursue their first World Cup victory with just over two weeks until the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
